CHAMBERLAIN AUSTEN: (1863-1937) - CHAMBERLAIN AUSTEN: (1863-1937) British statesman who served as Foreign Secretary 1924-29 during which time he negotiated the Locarno Treaties (1925) aimed at preventing war between France and Germany. Nobel Peace Prize winner, 1925. Vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of Chamberlain seated in a serious half-length pose behind his desk and holding some papers in his hands. Photograph by Elliott & Fry of London and bearing their imprint to the paper mount and verso. Signed by Chamberlain in fountain pen ink to the lower photographer´s mount, ´À Dr. Hans Madol, Austen Chamberlain´ , and dated 9th November 1934 in his hand. Some silvering and small defects to the edges of the image and with some light, uniform age toning to the photographer´s mount, G Hans Roger Madol (1903-1956) German-Jewish biographer, writer, diplomat, and antiquarian book dealer. Madol was best known for his exhaustively researched biographies of monarchs and political figures, many compiled using unpublished memoirs and letters.
