MRAZEK KAREL: (1910-1998) - MRAZEK KAREL: (1910-1998) Czechoslovak fighter pilot of World War II, a fighter ace credited with 8 victories who participated in the Battle of Britain. Mrazek rose to become one of the most prominent Czech commanders in the RAF, leading the entire Czechoslovak Fighter Wing and was the very first Czechoslovak pilot to be awarded the British Distinguished Service Order (DSO). D.S., Mrazek , as Commanding Officer of 313 (Czechoslovak) Squadron, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p. (RAF Hornchurch, Essex), n.d. (28th March 1942). The typescript document, originally part of a larger Combat Report, states, in part, ´I was Red 1 and while flying over Guisnes at 11,000 feet I saw 4 FW.190´s on the port side about to attack my section. Turning sharply to port I made a head-on attack on the nearest with cannon and m/g. I fired a burst of about 1 1/2 secs. and the e/a broke away to port......Soon after crossing the coast near Calais my section was attacked by 3 Me.109E´s who dived down from clouds.....As I turned towards them I saw another Me.109E on the tail of a Spitfire. I turned to port and dived to attack from 7,000 feet. I opened fire in a rear attack at a range of 500 yards closing to 200 yards and fired a burst of 2 1/2 secs. I then saw the e/a diving vertically with dark smoke pouring out and last saw him still going down vertically at a height of 1,000 feet above the sea. I did not see him hit the water as I was then attacked by two Me.109´s and had to take violent evasive action. I shook off these e/a, regained some height and returned to base. I claim this Me.109E as destroyed´ . VG
