Chaplin commences his letter by announcing ´I am placed in a difficult position in so far as requesting the Modern Art people to loan you a picture, because of certain legal complications which are involved´, further explaining ´The picture they have was given to them by an Italian concern, who came by it illegally. In other words, it is a pirated print. And, as we are taking legal proceedings against these people in Italy, such a request by me to the Museum. might jeopardize our legal position´ . Chaplin concludes by hoping that Schuman understands, and expresses regret at not having seen him for more than a ´fleeting moment´ at the Algonquin.
