BONAPARTE LOUIS: (1778-1846) King of Holland 1806-10. Younger brother of Napoleon Bonaparte. An interesting L.S., Louis, as King, one page, 4to, Niemengen, 28th July 1808, to M. Van Leyden, in French. Bonaparte intends to approve new laws in Holland which will help peasants, stating in part `..I am more than ever convinced about the bad organization of the Netherlands, it seems a barbarism to me; everything has been done for the towns and nothing for these poor peasants. There is no lack of employees, the Schout, but they do very little or nothing at all, because their masters are lords who remain at home
´ further referring to a law project they have been working on, and saying 'I have seen with sadness that many villages did not have surgeons or midwives, and in some massacres were taking place..´ With blank integral leaf. VG £120-150 The Shout was in some regions of Holland a local appointed responsible in charge of administrative tasks and keeping order. Napoleon supressed that figure.
