MERLIN DE DOUAI: (1754-1838) Philippe-Antoine Merlin de Douai. French Politician and Lawyer. President of the National Convention and member of the committee of Public Safety. He voted for the execution of King Louis XVI. A good D.S., `Merlin´, one page, 4to, Paris, 19th November, 1797, on his Directory printed stationery, to the Minister of War, in French. At the time of the present letter Merlin de Douai is one of the five members of the Directory governing France. The partially printed document being an urgent reminder to the Minister of war, referring to a report he requested few days before related to Lieutenant Favre, of the 12th Cavalry Regiment. VG £80-120 The Directory replaced the Committee of Public Safety in November 1795 and governed France until Napoleon´s coup in November 1799. It was a five members committee, Merlin de Douai being one of them from September 1797 to June 1799. Barthelemy Louis Scherer (1747-1804) French General. French Minister of war 1797-99.
