LUCKNER NICOLAS: (1722-1794) German Officer and Danish Count. Luckner joined the French army, supported the French Revolution and became Marshal in 1791. In 1792 Rouget de Lisle dedicated to him the Chant de Guerre pour l'Armée du Rhin (''War Song of the Army of the Rhine''), which was to become better known as the Marseillaise, the French anthem. Aged 70, Luckner asked for dismissal which the National convention accepted, but when he returned to Paris he was arrested and sentenced to death, dying by guillotine. D.S., `Luckner´, one page, 4to, Freskati, Sweden, 16th August 1792, in French. The partially printed document, bearing a rare vignette to the heading stating ''La Nation, la Loi, le Roi'', is a pass given to Stanislas Daiguillon allowing him to reach Paris. Signed by Luckner in his capacity as General Commander of the army of the North. With a red wax seal to the front and an attractive ProPatria watermark. Overall age wear, mostly to the edges. Folded, with small tear and very small holes to the fold, not affecting the text or signature. G £300-400
