PETER III: (1728-1762) Emperor of Russia for only six months in 1762. Son of Anna Petrovna, the elder surviving daughter of Peter the Great. Peter III was deposed, most probably assassinated, as a result of a conspiracy led by his wife who succeeded him as Catherine II. Despite his very short reign, Peter III proclaimed religious freedom, a very enlightened move at that time, abolished the secret police and forbid landowners to kill their serfs. An extremely rare document, signed as Emperor, only two days after ascending to the throne. L.S., `Peter´, in Cyrillic, a bold ink signature, one page, folio, Saint Petersburg, 7th January 1762, to Bakhirev and Yakimov, in Cyrillic. The document being a decree addressed to the Court Office instructing to appoint Spiridon Bakhirev and Petr Yakimov Lieutenant Colonels and granting the allocation of their salary in the sum of three hundred rubles per year. The sheet bears a crown watermark. In very fine condition. VG £6000-9000
