APOLLINAIRE GUILLAUME: (1880-1918) French Poet, Playwright and Novelist. One of the forefathers of Surrealism, Apollinaire is credited with coining the word Surrealism. A good A.L.S., `Guil. Apollinaire´, one page, 8vo, Paris, 20th September 1918, to a colleague [Jean Cocteau], in French. The letter bears the printed heading of the Minister´s office, Ministry of the Colonies, Apollinaire stating `My dear colleague, I am sorry that you feel offended because of my letter, and because you have talent , come and visit me at the Excelsior
´ With blank integral leaf. Folded, with very small overall age wear. VG. £1200-2000 Only a month and a half after writing the present letter Apollinaire died in Spain, of flu pandemic, at the early age of 38. Jean Cocteau (1889-1963) French Poet, Novelist & Director. Cocteau and Apollinaire first met in December 1916, and exchanged correspondence since then for the last two years of Apollinaire´s life.
