Dès que j´irai tout à fait bien je vous un previendrai´ (Translation: ´Contrary to my wishes, I have not yet been able to come to Rouen; initially I was held up by work, but now by a cold that just won’t go away and is forcing me to take precautions. As soon as I am fully recovered, I shall let you know´ ). Monet proceeds to call on Depeaux´s kindness, explaining ´Ne pourriez vous pas m´obtenir un permis de circulation, de façon à pouvoir venir plus facilement à Rouen et éviter ainsi le mauvais séjour dans les gares où j´ai déja pincé ce rhume. Si vous en voyez la possibilité vous m´obligerez bien´ (Translation: ´Could you perhaps obtain a travel permit for me, so that I might travel to Rouen more easily and thus avoid the unpleasant wait in stations where I have already caught this cold? If you see a way of doing this, I would be most grateful´ ) and adding ´Je vous envoie à tout hazard les rensignements nécessaires plus ma photo. Si celle du conducteur était urgente, je pourrais vous l´envoyer´ (Translation: ´I am sending you the necessary details along with my photograph, just in case. If the driver’s photograph is required urgently, I could send it to you´ ). A letter of good association. Based in Rouen, Normandy, his immense passion for modern art helped establish the region as a vital hub for the Impressionist movement. Depeaux´s collection of almost six hundred paintings included twenty by Monet.
