A very rare Autograph letter by Chopin, with a small flourish to his last word being a kind of in a hurry capital letter signature, one page, 8vo, n.p., `´Samedi´´ (”Saturday”), n.d., [May 1847], to George Sand, in French. The present letter takes place shortly after the final break between Frédéric Chopin and George Sand, whose relationship lasted from 1838 to 1847, and which is among the most famous romantic passions. The rift between Chopin and Sand, which had been brewing for some time, was precipitated by the marriage of George Sand's daughter to the sculptor Auguste Clésinger. This union, disapproved by George Sand, caused her bitter falling out with her daughter. And it seems that Chopin listened with a sympathetic ear to the calumnies she heaped upon her mother. This letter is a letter of congratulations to George Sand on the occasion of this marriage. The composer also acknowledges receipt of her correspondent´s letter and despite their parting, responds immediately to her with kind words. Chopin states ` Vous dirai-je combien votre bonne lettre que je viens de recevoir m'a fait plaisir et combien les excellents détails touchant tout ce qui vous occupe maintenant m'ont intéressé ! Personne plus que moi parmi vos amis, vous le savez bien, ne fait de vœux plus sinc è res pour le bonheur de votre enfant – aussi dites-le-lui de ma part je vous prie. Je suis déjà bien. Dieu vous soutienne toujours dans votre force et votre activité. Soyez tranquille et heureuse...´ (Translation: ” Shall I tell you how pleased I was by your kind letter, which I just received, and how interested I was by the excellent details concerning everything that now occupies you! No one among your friends, as you well know, offers more sincere wishes for your child's happiness—so please convey this to her from me. I am already well. May God always sustain you in your strength and endeavors. Be at peace and happy...”) Chopin had been ill for a while, in this letter and in very few words and without further explanations says ` I am already well´. His last sentence sentence ` May God always sustain you in your strength and endeavors. Be at peace and happy.. ´ These lines resonate like a final farewell and a blessing. No resentment, no recriminations: perfect elegance. In very fine condition. VG Frédéric Chopin's letters to George Sand, despite the length of their relationship, are extremely rare. The editors of his complete correspondence have only found eighteen of them. The relationship between Chopin and Sand was the subject of much attention and commentary at the time, and has since become something of a myth. Countless studies, novels, and even films have been devoted to the subject, so much did the union of these two exceptional individuals, often stormy, always feverish, beyond the emotional ups and downs, nourish their respective geniuses. In a letter to Mademoiselle de Rozières, who cared for the composer, George Sand wrote about the present letter: “ He also wrote me a little note as if nothing had happened. ”. Things might have ended sooner had George Sand not written another letter to Chopin, again concerning her children—a letter now lost, but which Delacroix, to whom Chopin read it, deemed ”atrocious.” Chopin replied on July 24th. Our letter is therefore the penultimate one he sent her.
