VG Peter the Great and his wife Catherine I had twelve children, but only two of them survived into adulthood, Anna (1708-1728) and Elizabeth (1709-1762). The first, Anna, died at the very early age of 20. She died only few days after giving birth to her only son, the future Emperor Peter III of Russia. The barely twenty-year-old duchess died after having caught puerperal fever. The second, Elizabeth, became Empress of Russia 1741-62. She remains one of the most popular Russian monarchs because of her decision not to execute a single person during her reign. She declared her own nephew, her sister Anna´s son, the future Peter III, her heir.
