ELISABETH OF HESSE: (1864-1918) Princess Elisabeth of Hesse and by the Rhine, granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia as spouse of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich of Russia, son of Tsar alexander II and brother of Tsar Alexander III. After Sergei´s assassination in 1905, Elisabeth departed the Imperial Court and became a nun. She was murdered by the Bolsheviks. In 1981 she was canonized. A good A.L.S., `Elisabeth´, to the verso of a postcard, n.p., n.d., to Masha, in French. The Grand Duchess sends her best wishes to her correspondent thanking her for the letters received and states in part `I hope to meet you, may be this year in Russia, and will then explain to you our activities. Pray for us. Your Elisabeth´. Showing to the postcard damaged front cover the Tsar Alexander I, standing in a full length pose, in uniform, with large traces of former affixing.
