RUSSELL JOHN: (1792-1878) Known as Lord John Russell, 1st Earl Russell, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom 1846-52 & 1865-66. A good L.S., `Russell´, three pages, folio, Foreign Office, 1st of March 1861, to Chevalier de Fortunato, in French. Russell, in his capacity as Foreign Secretary and referring to Garibaldi´s occupation of the Italian Kingdom, states in part `..the communication which I made to you on the 20th that under existing circumstances you could no longer be received as the Representative of the late government of King Francis II.´ further saying `..I should have been glad if my sense of public duty had permitted me to show more sympathy than I have been able to do for the misfortunes of the young King and Queen whom you have so faithfully served.´ Folded, with very small overall age wear. G to VG £150-200 Francis II (1836-1894) King of the Two Sicilies 1859-61 & Maria Sophie of Bavaria (1841-1925) Queen consort of the Two Sicilies 1859-61. Francis II was overthrown in February 1861, only few weeks before the present letter was written.
