KIPLING RUDYARD: (1865-1936) - KIPLING RUDYARD: (1865-1936) English novelist, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1907. A.L.S., Rudyard Kipling , to the recto of a correspondence card, Bateman´s, Burwash, Sussex, 3rd November 1912, to Brother Altoy. Kipling thanks his correspondent for their letter and invitation to a Masonic Lodge ´which I greatly wish I could accept´ , although explaining ´Unluckily I can´t get away to town on the 15th or I would have come gladly´ . Some light overall foxing and one small file hole to the upper left corner, G Kipling is believed to have become a Freemason in around 1885 after being initiated into the Hope and Perseverance Lodge No. 782 in Lahore. Kipling so loved his Masonic experience that he memorialised its ideals in his poem The Mother Lodge.
