CHARLES IX: (1550-1574) To the outgoing Ambassador to Spain on his ´ will and intentions´

CHARLES IX: (1550-1574) King of France 1560-74. A rare L.S., Charles, one page, folio, Blois, 29th March 1572, to Monsieur de Fourquevaux, in Middle French. The King acknowledges receipt of Fourquevaux´s letter of the 14th March, along with an earlier one ´où vous me donniez avis de l'arrivée par-delà du sieur de Saint-Gouard´ (Translation: ´where you advised me of the arrival beyond the Baron de Saint-Gouard´), and explaining that he had not replied earlier, ´estimant toujours que de jour à autre ainsi que vous m'avez mandé, vous dussiez partir pour vous en venir ici me trouver, comme je m'assure de vous y voir bientôt et y serez le très bien venu, remettant à cette heure-là de vous faire entendre plus particulièrement mon vouloir et intentions´ (Translation: ´still believing that from time to time, as you have instructed me, you should leave to come here to find me, as I am sure to see you here soon and you will be very welcome, postponing until that time to make you hear more specifically my will and intentions´). With the address panel to the verso and just a few very small remnants of the original seal. Autographs of King Charles IX are rare and desirable as a result of his untimely death from tuberculosis at the age of 23. A few neat splits and tears to the edges (two strengthened with old tape) and with some light fraying, not affecting the signature. G

Raymond de Rouer de Pavie de Beccarie (1505/08-1574) Baron de Fourquevaux. French nobleman, governor, military commander and diplomat during the latter Italian Wars and the first French Wars of Religion. Fourquevaux served as the French Ambassador to Spain 1565-72.

Jean de Vivonne (c.1530-1599) Seigneur de Saint-Gouard and Marquis de Pisani. French soldier, governor, courtier and diplomat during the final years of the Italian Wars and throughout the French Wars of Religion. Saint-Gouard succeeded Fourquevaux as the French Ambassador to Spain in 1572, remaining in the post until 1582 and later briefly becoming French Ambassador to the Papal States, March - July 1585.
