SIMENON GEORGES: (1903-1989) ”..for twenty years I have not received a gift. Except this morning, to mark with a pink stone..” - SIMENON GEORGES: (1903-1989) Belgian Writer. Best known as the creator of the fictional detective Jules Maigret. An excellent autograph letter with very interesting content, A.L.S., ` Simenon´, two pages, 4to, n.p. [Paris], n.d. [May 1935], to André Thérive, on the printed stationery of the George V hotel in Paris, in French. This early letter is an exceptional testimony which explains Simenon´s own reaction after the publication of the first article, written by his correspondent, recognizing him as an authentic writer. Simenon embarked at the end of 1934 to make a world tour, and after 7 months and having visited New York, Panama, Galapagos, Australia, Bombay, etc... he returned to Paris where he finds on his arrival the article he will refer to in this letter, stating in part ` Mon cher confrère et magicien, car vous venez de conjurer un sort. My dear colleague and magician, because you have just conjured a spell. When I was twelve years old and I was making my first communion, I was feverishly awaiting my first gift in life: the gold watch that my good fairy godmother would give me according to custom. My godmother gave my mother eighteen francs to buy the gold watch. My mother did not buy the watch. And for twenty years I have not received a gift. Except this morning, Saturday, to mark with a pink stone since after a seven-month trip without mail, without newspapers, without even knowing if my books would be published, and my first hour in Paris makes me fall - so to speak - on a friend who says: `Have you read...'. I have just read, with tears in my eyes. I am confused, shaken.... Nevertheless, now, I feel it, my bad fairy godmother is crushed and I will receive gifts. Will I have the pleasure of speaking to you about it next week? Yes, if you haven't vanished like an elf. In any case, I thank you from deep in my heart, because you have helped me to digest a lot of the bitter past.”) VG André Thérive (1891-1967) French Journalist.
