MATISSE HENRI: (1869-1954) "The people who seek to see the Chapel and see nothing have made me feel sorry for them"
MATISSE HENRI: (1869-1954) French Artist and renowned Painter. A very fine signed twice A.L.S., ` H. Matisse´, a large signature, also signed to the envelope, two pages, 4to, lined paper, Nice, ` Monday´, n.d. [30th August 1949], to ` Monsieur Jean Darquet – Vence´, in French. I have been to Vence twice without seeing you. The first time you were in the mountains, lucky you! and the second time I was in such a hurry that I couldn't even...") I must inform you that from Monday, in a week, there will be at the Foyer Cordain a small exhibition relating to the Chapel composed of the part of the stained glass window that you saw here, the carpet executed by friar Rayssiguier as well as 20 drawings relating to the graphics. The people who seek to see the Chapel and see nothing have made me feel sorry for them") Before concluding, Matisse states ` Quelle vie qu´on vit!´ ("What a life we live!"). With two additional postscriptums. Accompanied by the original envelope, addressed in Matisse´s hand, signed to the verso as sender with his own address. Postmarked and stamped. With a very small tear to the upper edge, to the fold, not affecting the text orsignature, otherwise about VG
