BERLIOZ HECTOR: (1803-1869) Berlioz inscribes a large portrait for one of his students
BERLIOZ HECTOR: (1803-1869) French composer and conductor of the Romantic era. A good, large vintage signed and inscribed sepia 10.5 x 13 photograph, the image depicting Berlioz standing in a three-quarter length pose. Signed by the composer (with a particularly large and fine example of his signature) to the lower photographer´s mount, with an inscription in French, ´A mon ami Theodore Ritter, Hector Berlioz´, and dated 18th January 1866 in his hand. Framed and glazed in the original decorative antique frame to an overall size of 15.5 x 18. Signed photographs of Berlioz are extremely rare, and the present handsome example has an interesting association. A few minor, light stains to the image and mount, one only very minimally affecting the conclusion of Berlioz´s signature. About VG
Theodore Ritter (1840-1886) French composer and pianist, a student of Berlioz and later Franz Liszt. Ritter composed piano versions of Berlioz´s works L´enfance du Christ and Romeo et Juliette.
