TOLSTOY LEO: (1828-1910) ´ I'm glad to be back under the blue skies of Italy among a people who live´
TOLSTOY LEO: (1828-1910) Russian writer, regarded as one of the greatest authors of all time. A.L.S., Leon Tolstoi, one page, large 4to, Villa Fiorita, Florence, n.d., to Monsieur Mary, in French. Tolstoy writes, in full, ´Voila mon adresse a Florence quand vous aurez des lettres a me retourner. Je suis content de me sentir a nouveau sous le ciel bleu de l´Italie au milieu d´un peuple qui vit´ (Translation: ´This is my address in Florence when you have letters to return to me. I'm glad to be back under the blue skies of Italy among a people who live´). A short, yet charming letter in which Tolstoy expresses his appreciation of both Italy and its people. Some light creasing, largely to the right edge, otherwise about VG
At the end of December 1860, Tolstoy travelled to Italy and spent a month visiting Florence, Livorno, Naples and Rome. In the present letter he provides a beautiful eulogy of the Mediterranean atmosphere and customs, far from the Russian climate and society. It is not just the blue skies in the middle of winter that the novelist celebrates, but the soul and vitality of the Italian people.
