MUNKACSY MIHALY: (1844-1900) - MUNKACSY MIHALY: (1844-1900) Hungarian painter. The personal printed oblong 12mo Visiting Card of Munkacsy, unsigned, featuring his printed name ( ´M. de Munkacsy´ ) to the centre, and address at Avenue de Villiers (Paris) at the base, with four lines of text in his hand, to the recto and verso, in the third person, in French, ´remercie Monsieur Reville pour le superbe article sur le Mozart et serait charme s´il voulait assister a sa soiree du 23 mars´ (Translation: ´would like to thank Mr Reville for the superb article on the Mozart and would be delighted if he would attend his evening on 23 March´ ). VG Munkacsy refers to his oil painting The Last Moments of Mozart (1885), just one of several 'death-bed' visual reconstructions of the composer from the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Munkacsy´s work does, however, not belong to the usual sentimentalised visual accounts that show Mozart in the grip of emotional despair, but instead depicts the composer in the throes of a deeply internalised creative vision, synthesising his life and work—death and the Requiem—in a visual transfiguration that elevates Mozart's last moments to something beyond the earthly.
