DREYFUS ALFRED: (1859-1935) French artillery officer of Jewish ancestry whose trial and conviction in 1894 on charges of treason became one of the most polarising political dramas in modern French history. Known as the Dreyfus Affair, it ultimately ended with Dreyfus’s complete exoneration. A.L.S., A Dreyfus, one page, 8vo, n.p. ( ´Aux Armees´), 9th February 1918, to a Colonel, on the printed stationery of the Parc d´Artillerie de la 168 Division, 20 Corps d´Armee, in French. Dreyfus informs his correspondent that copies in German of Woodrow Wilson's last message to the American Congress, as well as copies of an appeal from Russia to the German soldiers, were dropped that day from a balloon. With several official ink stamps and annotations to the margins. Together with a typescript copy of an Appel de la Russie aux Soldats Allemands. VG, 2
