STEPHENSON SNR. ROBERT: (1788-1837) English civil engineer, the elder brother of George Stephenson, the 'father of railways'. A.L.S., R Stephenson, one page, 8vo, Pendleton Colliery (Salford, Lancashire), 7th February 1834. to Mr. Bagnall, a civil engineer in Liverpool. Stephenson states that he has received his correspondent´s letter and was pleased to hear that he was recovering, further explaining that he will not be able to leave the colliery until a late hour the following night and may not reach Bagnall on Sunday, and also remarking ´I have not seen Mr. Gill since we parted at Liverpool. I have seen his Agent & he says we have nothing to fear. I will endeavour to see Mr. G. tomorrow, it being Market Day I hope I shall find him in Manchester, when I shall be enabled to inform you what he has done in the matter´. With partial integral address leaf. Some light age wear and a few minor stains to the integral leaf and with a small, neat split at the lower edge of the vertical fold in the bifolium. About VG
In the early 1830s Robert Stephenson Snr. was appointed chief engineer of the Pendleton Collieries and supervised operations there until his death in 1837.
