AYER A. J.: (1910-1989) English philosopher, known for his promotion of logical positivism. T.L.S., A J Ayer, one page, 8vo, York Street, London, 5th May 1989, to James L. Harmon. Ayer writes, in full, ´I can think of nothing better than to recommend the doctrine adopted by Bernard (sic) Russell in his Introduction to his Sceptical Essays: ´That it is undesirable to believe a proposition when there is no ground whatever for supposing it true´. I endorse his opinion ´That this would tend to diminish the incomes of clairvoyants, bookmakers, bishops and others´ who live on irrational hopes´. A letter of good content written in the month before Ayer´s demise. Some very light, extremely minor thinning to the lower edge, and one small area of paper loss, otherwise VG
