JOHN XXIII: (1881-1963) Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli. Pope of the Roman Catholic Church 1958-1963. Beatified in 2000 and Canonized in 2014. An unusual A.L.S., `Roncalli nonce apostolique´, as Apostolic Nuncio to France, one page, 4to, n.p. [Ankara], n.d. [December 1944], to Monsignor Paul Bertoli, in French. Roncalli (John XXIII) had to travel on an Air Transport Command aircraft from Ankara to Cairo on 27th December 1944, during WWII, to take up post as Papal Nuncio at Paris. The future Pope thanks his correspondent for his congratulations on the occasion of Roncalli´s appointment as Nuncio to France, stating in part `Remerciements cordiaux. Priez pour ma nouvelle mission. Je suis tranquille et confiant. Lettre suit. Toujours votre ami fidèle... Pacini et Rocco... avec moi succes et consolations´ (Translation: "Heartfelt thanks. Pray for my new mission. I am calm and confident. Letter follows. Always your faithful friend... Pacini and Rocco... with me success and consolation") VG
Paolo Bertoli (1908-2001) Italian Roman Catholic Cardinal and Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. Bertoli would later be appointed, like John XXIII, Nuncio to France from 1960 to 1969, while Roncalli was Pope until his death in 1963.
