CLARKE HENRI JACQUES GUILLAUME: (1765-1818) Marshal of France in 1816, one of six created under King Louis XVIII from 1815-24. Duc de Feltre and Minister of War under Napoleon. L.S., Duc de Feltre, with four holograph lines annotation beneath, two pages, folio, Paris, 6th July 1813, to Marshal Jourdan, in French. The document bears to the upper left the printed heading of the Minister of war, and refers to the Emperor orders related to the Dragons, Chasseurs and Hussars troops that have to be sent to Spain, from France and Portugal. Clarke thanks Jourdan for his prompt responses which he will forward to the Emperor, and concludes with a personal post-scriptum asking for Jourdan´s health `It is a new misfortune in this difficult time we are living and it distresses me thinking in your Excellence and in the public situation..´ A good content letter in very fine condition. VG £150-200 Clarke refers to the Battle of Vitoria, 21st June, leaded by Joseph Bonaparte against the advice of Jourdan who was disabled and could not grant a proper command. The battle concluded with a decisive defeat of the French troops.
