HUGO JOSEPH: (1773-1828) French General in the Napoleonic wars. Father of Victor Hugo the French Writer. Scarce A.L.S., `Ton frere Hugo´, (''Your brother Hugo''), three pages, 8vo, Metz, 17th December 1813, to his sister Marguerite, in French. Hugo reports on his meeting with his mother saying `I have told you, my dear Goton, the way Mum received me.. the letters you will receive from Nancy will tell you something about…´ further saying `The devil [his wife?] may be thinks that she will hurt me a lot denigrating me in Paris.. but I will leave her fooled with her intrigues and viper´s tongue.´ And before concluding and referring to the war states `We listen every day rumors about peace.. I do think that both parties need it..´ Folded. Small overall minor age wear, otherwise G £400-600 Marguerite Martin-Chopine Hugo (?-1832) also known as ''Goton''. Sister of Joseph Hugo and aunt of Victor Hugo. Marguerite was in charge of watching over the young Eugene and Victor in 1814. Hugo Joseph and his wife Sophie Trébuchet (1772-1821) were separated since 1812. Hugo Joseph living in Spain with his mistress asked her to divorce. She refused although she was since long the mistress of Victor Fanneau de Lahorie (who is often reported as the real father of Victor Hugo). The children stood for a while with Marguerite.
