DROUET D´ERLON JEAN-BAPTISTE: (1765-1844) Count of Erlon. Commander of the 1st Corps of the Armée du Nord at the battle of Waterloo. A lengthy and interesting L.S. `D. Cte d´Erlon´, five pages, folio, Almendralejo, 23rd December 1811, to Marshal Soult, in French. Drouet, in his capacity as Commander of the 5th Corps in Spain, states in part ´There is no change on the positions occupied by the English and Spanish Armies. Apparently they have only sent a considerable number of troops to disturb our communications in Badajoz..´ Drouet D´erlon further explains in detail the measures and works he recommends to achieve on order to defend the city of Merida, and before concluding says `We are doing all the necessary to make Morillo´s troops be aware of the victories the imperial army is obtaining everywhere in Spain ´ The present letter was written only two weeks before the Battle of Waterloo.
