RADET ETIENNE: (1762-1825) French Gendarmerie General. Radet leaded the troops that Napoleon sent to abduct Pope Pius VII and bring him back to France to imprison him. A.L.S., `Radet´, one page, 4to, n.p., [Italy], n.d., to His Highness Monseigneur Prince-Chancellor, in French. Unusual letter where Radet acts in favour of a priest, father Bruno Ugla, related to his correspondent the Prince-Chancellor of the Empire. Radet states in part `..this respectable old man is so pleased with your kindness that his feelings for his benefactor turned into tears and prays to heaven..´ With blank integral leaf. VG £100-150 The correspondent `Altesse Sérenissime, Monseigneur Prince-Chancellor´, could be either Prince-Duke Jean-Jacques Regis de Cambaceres (1753-1824) Nobleman and Statesman, co-author of the Napoleonic code, or Prince Eugene de Beauharnais (1781-1824) Viceroy of Italy, who was appointed `Chancellor of State´ by his adoptive father Napoleon Bonaparte, although it was a title without duties and functions.
