MCCUDDEN JAMES: (1895-1918) English Fighter Ace of World War I, Victoria Cross winner for his flying services over France, August 1917 - March 1918. Extremely rare D.S., `J. B. McCudden´, one page, folio, France, 24th January 1918. The partially printed typed document is a typed letter report relating to Combats in the Air prepared by McCudden following his action in a S.E.5. Aircraft in the Vitry area, stating, in part, `..At 1,55 saw a D.F.W. being shelled over Monchy-le-Prieux by our A.A. I fired 200 rounds at E.A. at ranges varying from 30 to 200 yards. I now saw E.A. gunner leaning into pilot´s cockpit, apparently taking control….' further saying `I fired another burst into E.A., who then went down out of control, alternately diving and stalling until it got to about 4000 feet over Vitry, when E.A. spun and I last saw him at about 2000 still spinning..visibility very poor´ An excellent signed document relating directly to McCudden's 43rd Aerial Victory (from a total of 57 confirmed Victories). Countersigned by Major commanding Squadron 56 of the Royal Flying Corps. VG £600-900
