PIUS VII: (1742-1823) Pope of Roman Catholic Church and Ruler of the Papal States 1800-23. In 2007, Pope Benedict XVI began the process of canonizing him as a Saint. A.L.S., `Card.le Chiaramonti´, one page, 4to, Cesena, 24th July 1788, in Italian. Pope Pius VII, in his capacity as Cardinal, thanks his correspondant for his announcement after having fulfilled a diplomatic mission and soon leaving Venice to Cesena, and states in part `..I cannot persuade myself that our adversaries would be our judges..´, further referring to the documents issued by the English.
