PHILIP V: (1683-1746) King of Spain 1700-24 & 1724-46. Grandson of Louis XIV. A very fine L.S., Yo el Rey, one page, 4to, Madrid, 30th August 1707, to the Count of Peralada, in Spanish. The King informs his correspondent about the joyful new and announces the birth of his first child, his son and heir the Prince Louis I of Spain, named after the King´s grandfather Louis XIV of France. The King states in part `Es tan singular el beneficio con que la divina misericordia nos ha favorecido en el dichoso parto de la Reina, mi muy cara y amada, en el dia 25 de Agosto a las diez y dieciséis minutos de la mañana, dando a luz un Principe a estos Reinos, y en el mayor consuelo… y benigna protección con que nos mira. Continuándola con la salud y buena disposición con que ha quedado y prosigue la Reina…´ (Translation: `The benefit with which divine mercy has favoured us in the Queen´s blissful childbirth, my very dear and beloved spouse, on August 25th at ten and sixteen minutes in the morning, giving birth to a Prince for these Kingdoms, and in the greatest relief... and the benign protection with which he looks at us. Continuing with the health and good disposition with which the Queen has remained and continues…´) Attractively countersigned by Francisco de Quincoces. With address leaf, bearing a partially damaged paper seal affixed. Very small age wear with two very small holes corresponding to the seal to the verso, not affecting the text or signatures.

Louis, King of Spain (1707-1724) He was born on 25th August 1707 at the Palacio del Buen Retiro, in Madrid, five days before the present letter was written. Eldest son of the reigning King Philip V of Spain and his wife Maria Luisa of Savoy. His reign is one of the shortest in history, lasting seven months, from January 1724 when his father abdicated in his favour, to August 1724 when he died at the very early age of seventeen of smallpox.
