HINDENBURG PAUL VON: (1847-1934) 'Marxism, Communism and Socialism are in my opinion connected with each other......They need to be treated accordingly'
HINDENBURG PAUL VON: (1847-1934) German Field Marshal and statesman who served as President of Germany 1925-34 and played a key role in the Nazi seizure of power, appointing Adolf Hitler as Chancellor of Germany in 1933. A good A.L.S., Hindenburg, two pages, large 4to, Hannover, 7th November 1923, to Wilhelm Groener ( 'Dear Minister of State!'), in German. Hindenburg thanks Groener for their interesting letter, some parts of which he agrees with and other parts not, remarking 'Parliamentarianism may be good and well for England, which knows two parties; for our fatherland, which is split in about a dozen parties, it is not', adding that a lack of activity in the current Reichs government has its roots in revolution and continuing 'I deem it proper that Prussia and Germany should be one, as they were under Bismarck. But Prussia has been economically ruined by Mr. Severing, so that naturally Bavaria, which, with tremendous effort, has turned itself into the only orderly German state, unwittingly plays a bigger part today than it would have otherwise. I strongly hope that the dualism between Prussia and Bavaria gets reconciled as time goes by. Bavaria has been severely aggravated by our grouping it together with the rest of the degenerate system. Hopefully, that will straighten itself out' before concluding 'Marxism, Communism and Socialism are in my opinion connected with each other, so that, if they are temporarily separated, they will always find each other again. They need to be treated accordingly. With this I shall end my political reflection. As you know, the topic is not my favourite.' Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Hindenburg. A letter of fine political content. Some lengthy, neat splits to the central folds have made the letter a little fragile in places. G
