DE GAULLE CHARLES: (1890-1970) French General and statesman who led the Free French Forces during World War II. President of the French Republic 1959-69. A World War II date T.L.S., C. de Gaulle, with five lines of holograph text, one page, 4to, Paris, 14th September 1944, to [William] David Ross, in French. De Gaulle thanks his correspondent for their letter and remarks 'Les temoignages d'amis tels que vous me sont particulierement precieux. Qu'ils me viennent d'Angleterre ajoute a leur valeur' (Translation: 'The testimonies of friends like you are particularly precious to me. That they come to me from England adds to their value') and concludes the letter in his hand by stating, in part, 'Soyez assure que je n'oublierai jamais Oxford et, notamment votre aimable accueil' (Translation: 'Rest assured that I will never forget Oxford and, in particular, your kind welcome'). Sir William David Ross (1877-1971) Scottish Aristotelian philosopher, translator, civil servant and university administrator who served as Provost of Oriel College, Oxford from 1929-47 and was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford (194-44) and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (1944-47).

Charles de Gaulle had visited Oxford on 25th November 1941 when he was invited to address the French Club at Balliol College.
