[BATTLE OF BRITAIN]: ELKINGTON JOHN F. D. 'TIM' (1920-2019) British Wing Commander, a fighter pilot of the RAF during World War II who participated in the Battle of Britain. A scarce document, unsigned, two pages, 4to, n.p. (near Murmansk, Russia), 6th October 1941. The partially printed document, completed in Elkington's hand, is a Combat Report (Form "F", marked Secret) providing details of one of the pilot's aerial engagements involving the destruction of a Junkers Ju 88, the narrative stating, in part, 'On 6th Oct. aerodrome attacked by Ju.88's. Ordered to take off. This done as bombs fell, not waiting for C.O......Climbed after 88s, not straining anything, with F/Sgt Barnes & McCann joining up slowly behind.....Broke away & climbed after 2nd 88 who dived for evasive action. 2 bursts of 2 secs each registered no visible effect......Fire from 2 upper rear guns on 88 observed. Broke away and lost a/c but soon picked it up at "0" ft being attacked by F/Sgt Barnes from about 150 yds range......firing continuous burst of 4 secs & observed metal plate ?? of tail fin flapping in the breeze. Final range of last attack was 100 yards.....Thinking little ammunition left returned to base ignoring at least 3 88's returning westwards. Fired only 200 rounds in all'. Neatly trimmed to the upper edge with the possible loss of a few lines of text to the second page. VG
