CATHCART CHARLES: (1721-1776) 9th Lord Cathcart. British Lieutenant General and aide-de-camp to the Duke of Cumberland, in which capacity he participated in the Battle of Fontenoy (1745) and the Battle of Culloden (1746). Cathcart later served as Ambassador from Great Britain to Russia 1768-72. L.S., with his initial C, one page, 4to, Grosvenor Place (London), 7th August 1776, to his son, William. Cathcart states 'I hear you dayly mentioned with the greatest applause' and continues 'What you & the Grahams so wisely say is the best judged possible, but a sea voyage changes the question. Pray be so so good as to tell them how much I am obliged to them for their kindness. I fancy you will find me very inaccessible when you arrive. I refer you to dear Charles', further remarking in a postscript that 'Every thing I wrote yesterday still stands in the same situation'. With integral address panel bearing a good red wax seal (some large areas of paper loss caused by the original breaking). Some light age toning and wear, about VG
