HUXLEY THOMAS HENRY: (1825-1895) English biologist and anthropologist, a strong advocate of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. A.L.S., T. H. Huxley, two pages, 8vo, Jermyn Street (London), 21st April 1868, to Professor Bachheim. Huxley states that he is honoured by his correspondent's proposition and continues to inform him 'The authorized version of my address appeared not as a pamphlet, but in Macmillan's magazine for March last', further remarking 'I presume that the extract you propose to make will not be so long that you need obtain the sanction of the publisher'. With blank integral leaf (very slight traces of former mounting to the verso). Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Huxley and signed by him to the lower left corner. Huxley refers to his famous lecture On a Piece of Chalk which was delivered to the working men of Norwich during a meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1868. The piece reconstructs the geological history of Great Britain from a simple piece of chalk and demonstrates science as 'organised common sense'. It was published as an essay in Macmillan's Magazine.
