James expresses her regret at not having seen Maschler when he was in London, although rejoices at the good news regarding a book bus ('It must be such a relief and a joy to you to know that your wonderful imaginative idea is proving such a success') and further discusses the possibility of them meeting in July. Together with six 4to pages of printed email correspondence between James and Maschler, July 2008 - December 2009, most concerning Maschler's book bus project in Zambia, but also making references to his autobiography ('The pages about Lauren Bacall echo what I was told by an American publisher when I asked who was the most difficult and disagreeable author on tour they had ever encountered, and they took exactly the same view'), Jeffrey Archer, John Lennon, and The Private Patient ('thank you for your very generous comments.....As this may well be my last Adam Dalgliesh novel, it is a joy to me that it has been so well received') etc. VG, 7

Tom Maschler (1933-2020) British publisher who, from 1960, was head of the publishing company Jonathan Cape for more than three decades. Maschler was also instrumental in establishing the Booker Prize in 1969.
