WELLS H.G.: (1866-1946) 'Most fiction doesn't exist. All that does exist is incomparable'

WELLS H.G.: (1866-1946) English writer, remembered for his science fiction novels. An excellent A.L.S., H. G. Wells, to the recto and verso of his correspondence card, Chiltern Court, Clarence Gate, London, 14th September 1932, to John Vine Milne ('Dear Milne'). Wells writes in response to his correspondent's question seeking his opinion on the twelve best novels of all time (the answers to have been published in The London Book Window) and states 'I don't believe in putting books into class lists & saying which is greater & which is less', further adding 'It is like asking which is the greater work of nature, the shrew mouse or the elephant or the cedar tree or the violet. Most fiction doesn't exist. All that does exist is incomparable'. A letter of fine content and good association. A few contemporary pencil annotations. VG

John Vine Milne (d.1932) English schoolmaster, the father of writer A. A. Milne. John Vine Milne ran the small independent Henley House private school in Kilburn where he employed H. G. Wells as a science master from 1889-90. A. A. Milne attended the school and was taught by Wells.
