DOUGLAS LORD ALFRED: (1870-1945) English poet and journalist, and a lover of Oscar Wilde. A.L.S., Alfred Douglas, two pages, small 4to, Hove, Sussex, 11th January 1934, to Samuel Steward. Douglas thanks Steward for their kind letter and remarks 'I appreciate very much what you say & it is pleasant to think that some people approve of me, to make up for all the buckets of abuse that have been emptied over me many times these last thirty years!', further expressing his wish that there could be a chance of them meeting, 'but I am unlikely to come to America. Perhaps however you will come to England, in which case I hope you will come to see me'. In a postscript Douglas also writes 'I wonder if you have seen my latest book "The True History of Shakespeare's Sonnets", published by Martin Secker, London? I am hoping to get an American edition'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Douglas. A letter of interesting association. VG

Samuel Steward (1909-1993) American tattoo artist and pornographer. Steward taught English at Ohio State University in Columbus from 1932-34 and at the same time became close friends with Gertrude Stein, later paying her a visit to her country house in France during the summer of 1937. It was on this visit that Steward met Lord Alfred Douglas, as well as other literary figures including Thornton Wilder and Andre Gide.
