In the collection Zola provided 'literary and artistic talks' preceded by an introductory text laying out the main principles of his aesthetics. On 7th September, shortly before this letter, he devoted an article to two writers, Adolphe Belot and Ernest Daudet. 1865 was also the year in which Zola's sordid autobiographical novel La Confession de Claude was published. Attracting the attention of the police, it resulted in Hachette dismissing Zola from his job in the sales department of the publishers.
