Hugo acknowledges that Pichot's letter has come from a good and true friend and continues to remark 'Vous verrez qu'il n'y a pas de ma faute dans ce qui vous a afflige. Le jour ou vous m'avez parle du Roi de Rome, l'ode etait deja faite et prise par Ladvocat qui etait venu au moins dix fois chez moi depuis trois jours. Si je vous ne l'ai pas dit, c'est parceque vous m'auriez demande ces vers......Or ils n'etaient deja plus en mon pouvoir' (Translation: 'You will see that it is not my fault in what has afflicted you.
