[HOMOSEXUALITY]: COURTENAY WILLIAM (c.1768-1835) 9th Earl of Devon. 'Kitty' Courtenay attracted infamy for a homosexual affair with the art collector William Beckford, whom Courtenay had first met when he was eleven years old (Beckford was eight years his senior). A.L.S., Lord Courtemay, in the third person, one page, 4to, Champs Elysees, Paris, 13th June 1817, to George Eastlake. Courtenay states that a Deed had been sent to his correspondent through the post, but was returned and is to be sent again ( 'most likely it will arrive in a day or two if it has been sent off from London unless anything should have occurred there to stop it') and concludes his letter by writing 'Lord Courtenay feels very sorry to be the cause of so much trouble to Mr. Eastlake'. With integral address leaf (minor area of paper loss to one corner). Some very light age wear and a few minor traces of former mounting, VG
