MARIE ANTOINETTE: (1755-1793) Queen consort of France 1774-92 as the wife of King Louis XVI. Marie Antoinette was the last Queen of France before the fall of the monarchy during the French Revolution. Executed by guillotine on the Place de la Revolution at the age of 37. A rare D.S., Payez, Marie Antoinette, one page, large folio (24.5 x 35 cm), Versailles, 31 ^st December 1783, in French. The manuscript document is addressed to the Treasurer General of Finances, Marc Antoine Francois Marie Randon de la Tour, and is a warrant for him to pay, from the funds set aside by the State for the maintenance and sustenance of officers, unto the Cavalcade Squire de Salveri, the sum of four hundred and fifty livres which has been granted to him, further instructing that the expense be entered into the accounts of the King at Paris. Signed by Marie Antoinette at the foot (to the left) with her indication that the amount has been paid and with a secretarial signature of the Queen to the right, originally applied to confirm the contents of the warrant. Countersigned at the foot by Jacques-Mathieu Augeard (1732-1805) French courtier and memoirist. Lightly tipped at the left edge to a folio page removed from an album.
