GARNIER CHARLES: (1825-1898) - GARNIER CHARLES: (1825-1898) French architect of the Opera de Monte Carlo, the Palais Garnier in Paris, and other buildings. A.L.S., Ch. Garnier , one page, 8vo, Paris, n.d., to a gentleman, on the printed stationery of the architect’s office at the Ministere des Travaux Publics, Agence des Travaux du Nouvel Opera , in French. Garnier states that he is sending a note (no longer present) from his friend Boulanger ‘relative a un pauvre garcon dans la plus grande misere et a qui l'on a dit qu'il y avait quelques maisons.....aux environs’ (Translation: ‘relating to a poor boy in the greatest poverty and who was told that there were a few houses….nearby’ ) who took in unfortunate people more or less free of charge, adding ‘comme nous ne savons a qui est ces maisons j'ai prie le haste de m'adresser a vous et de vous demander si cela existait et quelles seraient les conditions d'admission’ (Translation: ‘as we do not know who owns these houses I hastened to address you and ask you if this existed and what would be the conditions of admission’ ). With blank integral leaf (very minor traces of former mounting to the verso). A couple of small pinholes to the upper left corner, only very slightly affecting the printed letterhead, otherwise VG
