PAPEN FRANZ VON: (1879-1969) German politician and diplomat who served as Chancellor of Germany in 1932 and as Vice-Chancellor under Adolf Hitler 1933-34. T.L.S., Papen, one page, 4to, Vienna, 7th January 1938, to the private office of the Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor (Adolf Hitler), on the printed stationery of the Ambassador Extraordinary of the German Empire on a special mission, in German. Papen states that he is forwarding a letter (no longer present) from the director of the Richard Wagner Memorial ‘with the request to determine whether the Fuhrer would be inclined to purchase the Wagner letters in question from his disposition fund in order to present them to the Richard Wagner Memorial in Bayreuth’. With several official stamps (including that of the Privatkanzlei Adolf Hitler) and pencil annotations. Four file holes to the left edge, not affecting the main body of text or signature. About VG

Richard Wagner (1813-1883) German composer, greatly admired by Hitler who frequently visited Bayreuth from 1923 onwards and regarded Wagner’s operas as an embodiment of his own vision of the German nation.
