JUIN ALPHONSE: (1888-1967) French Marshal. A good 5.5 x 3.5 personal printed correspondence card signed, `A. Juin´, written to both sides, Paris, 15th May, [1953], to Maurice Garçon, in French. Juin thanks his correspondent´s message of congratulations for his appointment as Marshal, and states in part `..with this appointment my duty is expected to be even more severe, and for sure the Government will expect that from now on I will make miracles with nothing or very little..´ EX
Marshal Juin was gravely wounded in 1915 during World War one. As a result of this wound, he lost the use of his right arm. During WWII Juin was captured in 1939, at the Battle of France, and remained as prisoner of war until 1941. He would also command the French Expeditionary Corps. His expertise in mountain warfare was crucial in breaking the Gustav Line, which had held up the Allied advance for six months. After WWII, Juin returned to Africa as the Resident-General of France in Morocco. He was the French Army's last living Marshal of France.
