Gregory XVI writes this letter in his capacity as Pope, stating in part ` Dilecte fili, salutem et apostolicam benedictionem libenter tuas accepimus litteras intimo pictatis, atque obsequii sensu exaratas cum historia gallico sermone a fe conscripta typisque lugdunensibus edita de Hieronymo, cujus epistolas gallice quoque a fe redditas jam pridem nobis offerre voluisti...´ (Translation: “ Beloved son, we gladly received your greeting and apostolic blessing in your intimately written letter, and written with a sense of obedience, with a history written in French by Faith and issued to the people of Lyon, concerning Hieronymus, whose letters, also rendered in French by Faith, you wished to offer us a long time ago…”) Further again, the Pope congratulates his correspondent for his work, saying `… we congratulate you very much that you are endeavouring to spend your care and energy in recounting the excellent deeds of so great a doctor of the church, and in completing other religious works…´ Bearing to the address leaf a Papal red wax seal in good condition, with several ink stamps.
