PIUS VIII: (1761-1830) Pope of the Roman Catholic Church and Ruler of the Papal States 1829-30. A very short pontificate of one year and ten days. A fine L.S., ` F. S. Card[inale] Castiglioni´, one page, 4to, Di Casa (“From home”) , 20th November 1822, to Francesco Cancellieri, in Italian. The future Pope refers to two priests his correspondent whished to know, and states in part ` Il Cardinal Penitenziere valutando le premure di V. Illma avvanzategli con lettera di 16, a favore de Signori Pietro Sassi, e Clemente Biagioli, fece note nella segnatura di ieri le di lei ittanze per la giubilazione del primo, e per la sostituzione al secondo…´ (Translation: “ The Cardinal Penitentiary, evaluating the concerns that Your Excellency expressed to him with your letter of the 16th, in favour of Pietro Sassi, and Clemente Biagioli, noted in yesterday's requests, for the retirement of the former, and for the replacement of the latter…”) With address leaf, bearing more than half of a red wax seal, with a very small area of paper loss as a result of the opening of the letter, otherwise G to about VG
