DEY HUSSEIN: (1765-1838) Also known as Hassan Bashaw or Hussein Pasha. Hussein Dey was the last of the Ottoman rulers of the Regency of Algiers. Dey surrendered to the French, on July 1830, agreeing in exchange his freedom and keeping possession of his personal wealth, putting an end to more than three hundred years of Ottoman rule. Very rare and curious L.S., by Hussein Dey with an attractive signature, in Arabic characters, one page, 4to, form the Harbour of La Valetta, 8th October 1833, to the Governor of Malta, in Italian. Hussein Dey states `His Highness Hussein Pasha, Ex-Dey of Algiers, Begs Your excellency that you choose a house belonging to the Government to be granted to me for the residence of myself together with my familyÉ regarding the payment, Your Excellency will allow me not having any. I am infinitely grateful to you for this..« further concluding with a precise information for his correspondent before choosing the house `I inform you that my family consists of thirty one persons, including myself.« With blank integral leaf.
