An excellent content and lengthy unedited A.L.S., `Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy«, five pages, 4to, Leipzig, 20th February 1843, to Hermann Kunibert Neumann, in German. The letter bears to the upper left corner, of each of the three sheets, a blind embossed seal showing a vessel with three masts. Mendelssohn thanks his correspondent for several matters and refers to Neumann«s work Sangerkrieg and explains his thoughts and plan stating that he considers this work as a link between drama and opera. Mendelssohn explains his musical approach saying that he will have the harp playing occasionally, and insisting in not mixing the drama with opera melodrama. He furthers suggests some changes and expresses some disagreements, and states in part `Das StŸck ist wesentlich ein Drama und die Musik kann und darf nur als untergeordnetes Hilfsmittel (wie dies auch bei vielen anderen Dramas der Fall ist) auftreten. So meine ich z.B. dass sowohl der Wettgesang der beider Dichter, als der des Dichters mit dem Teufel, ja Ÿberhaupt alle lyrischen Stellen der Art, welche der SŠnger und Dichter vorzutragen haben, durchaus nicht gesungen werden dŸrfen«..« A cleanely written letter of excellent content and good association.
